Luffy successfully broke into Impel Down, the government's highest jail institution, but was unable to reach Ace in time. He then organized a major breakout, with the other convicts helping him in reaching Marineford, where Ace is scheduled to be executed.War broke out in Marineford when Whitebeard, one of the Four Emperors and Ace's captain, led his crew into battle against the Marines, who were later accompanied by Luffy and the Impel Down prisoners. Luffy was found to be the son of Monkey D. Dragon, the commander of a group of revolutionaries aiming to overthrow the World Government, and Ace was found to be Gol D. Roger's son. Luffy managed to release Ace, however Ace was killed while rescuing Luffy from Admiral Akainu. Luffy was taken away from the battlefield as Whitebeard was defeated by the Marines. Suddenly, Blackbeard arrived with his men, killed Whitebeard, and stole his Devil Fruit power. Shanks then arrived and brought an end to the fighting.

Two years later, the Straw Hats joined the Grand Line for the New World. In the New World, they established an alliance with Trafalgar Law, one of the Eleven Supernovas, who aimed at eliminating Kaidou, the Fourth Emperor.They traveled through Punk Hazard and Dressrosa in order to demolish facilities that supplied artificial Devil Fruits to Kaidou, defeating Warlord Donquixote Doflamingo in the process. The crew also became connected with the Big Mom Pirates, who offered Sanji a political marriage. The Straw Hats and their allies successfully released Sanji, and Jinbe, a fish-man and former Warlord who wished to bring peace between humans and fish-men, joined Straw Hat Pirates.
